Does this sound like your feet?

What neuropathy feels like in your feet

Nerve damage rarely shows up all at once. It usually starts quietly in the toes and works its way up, and the sensations can be odd enough that people wait months before mentioning them. These are the common neuropathy symptoms people notice in the feet:

Tick what sounds familiar

If a few of those ring true, have your feet looked at. Caught early, neuropathy is far easier to live with.

What causes peripheral neuropathy?

Neuropathy means the peripheral nerves running to and from your feet have been damaged. Plenty of things can do it, but in South Florida the leading cause is diabetes.

  • Leading cause in South Florida

Diabetes and prediabetes — years of high blood sugar injure the small nerves in the feet. This is diabetic peripheral neuropathy, the most common form.

  • Nutritional gaps, especially a vitamin B12 deficiency
  • Heavy alcohol use over time
  • Thyroid or kidney disease
  • Chemotherapy and some other medications
  • A pinched or compressed nerve, such as tarsal tunnel syndrome at the ankle
  • Injury, infection, or sometimes no clear cause at all (idiopathic neuropathy)

Pinning down the cause matters.

Care for a B12 deficiency looks nothing like care for a compressed nerve, and getting that wrong wastes time your feet don’t have.

Why numb feet are a serious problem

Here is the part most people miss. When your feet lose feeling, they also lose their alarm system. A blister from a stiff new shoe, a small cut, a pebble that slipped into your sock, you feel none of it, so it goes unnoticed and untreated. In someone with diabetes, that quiet spot can become a diabetic foot ulcer, get infected, and in the worst cases lead to amputation.

How a quiet spot escalates
  1. A blister, a small cut, a pebbleYou feel none of it
  2. Unnoticed and untreated
  3. Diabetic foot ulcer
  4. Infection
  5. AmputationIn the worst cases

Loss of protective sensation is the single biggest reason a minor foot problem turns into a major one.

This is where a podiatrist earns their keep. Guarding feet that can’t feel, spotting wounds early, and taking pressure off the danger spots is core podiatry, and it is daily work here. Our diabetic foot care and wound care work hand in hand with neuropathy treatment, on the same visit and in the same office.

How we check your feet for nerve damage

A neuropathy visit starts with your story: what you feel, where it sits, when it began, your history, and your blood sugar. Then Dr. Sandler examines your feet and tests the nerves with simple, painless checks.

  1. Foot exam

A full foot exam of the skin, structure, and circulation

  2. Protective sensation

Protective-sensation testing with a monofilament, the thin nylon strand pressed lightly against the sole

  3. Vibration

Vibration testing with a tuning fork

  4. Reflexes & muscles

    Reflex and muscle checks

  5. Pulses & blood flow

A look at your pulses and blood flow, since poor circulation often travels alongside neuropathy

If more is needed

When the picture calls for more, we arrange nerve-conduction studies or bloodwork to confirm the cause, and we work with your primary care physician or endocrinologist on the medical side of things.

Treating neuropathy and protecting your feet

No single pill undoes nerve damage, so good neuropathy treatment runs on two tracks at once: calming the symptoms and shielding your feet from harm.

Easing the symptoms and slowing the damage

Treating the cause does most of the work.

For diabetic neuropathy, steady blood-sugar control is the most effective way to slow it, so we coordinate with whoever manages your diabetes. For the pain itself, several prescription nerve-pain medications can help, and your physician will match one to your health. Correcting a B12 deficiency, easing off alcohol, and staying active all move the needle too.

REMY Class IV laser therapy for nerve pain

For burning, tingling, and numb feet, we also offer in-office foot laser therapy with the REMY Class IV laser.

It is a high-power therapeutic laser: it sends light energy into the tissue, where it calms inflammation, supports local circulation, and eases nerve pain. Clinicians call this photobiomodulation. There are no needles, no medication, and no downtime; most people feel a gentle warmth during the session and go straight back to their day.

A series of visits

Laser therapy works as a series of visits rather than a single one, and Dr. Sandler sets how many you need after your exam.

What it won’t do

It does not repair damaged nerves or replace blood-sugar control and protective foot care; it is one more way to ease the symptoms alongside them.

Research on laser therapy for neuropathy is still developing, and results vary from person to person.

Who it is not for

Laser care is well tolerated, but it is not for everyone: we review your history first and avoid treating over active skin cancer, or during pregnancy, without a physician’s sign-off.

Read more about the laser and its other uses on our REMY laser treatment page.

Podiatric care that prevents wounds

This is what we add on top. Because you can’t feel a problem starting, we become the eyes for your feet.

  • Regular diabetic foot exams that catch trouble before it becomes a wound
  • Professional care of nails and calluses, which turn dangerous once you can’t feel them
  • Custom orthotics and diabetic shoes or inserts that offload the pressure points where ulcers form
  • Prompt treatment of any cut, blister, or ulcer, with on-site wound care
  • Footwear guidance, so the shoe itself stops doing damage

When a compressed nerve is the cause

Sometimes the trouble is mechanical rather than systemic: a nerve pinched at the ankle, as in tarsal tunnel syndrome. As a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon, Dr. Sandler can assess whether releasing that nerve would help. Surgery stays on the table only when a specific, fixable cause points to it, never as a first move.

Protecting your feet at home

Between visits, a handful of daily habits keep small problems small.

Find something that isn’t healing? Don’t wait it out. Call us.

  • Look over the soles of your feet every day, with a mirror or a little help, for cuts, blisters, redness, or swelling
  • Never go barefoot, indoors or out
  • Check inside your shoes before you put them on
  • Wash and moisturize your feet, but not between the toes
  • Trim nails straight across and carefully, or let us do it
  • Keep your blood sugar in your target range
  • Leave corns and calluses to us; no bathroom surgery

When to see a doctor right away

A few signs need prompt care, and they matter even more if you have diabetes:

  • A sore, blister, or ulcer on the foot that isn’t healing
  • New redness, warmth, swelling, or drainage, which can mean infection
  • A cut or wound you never felt happen
  • Numbness or burning that is spreading or getting worse
  • A change in the color of your foot or toes
  • New weakness, or a foot that is starting to change shape

For anyone living with diabetes and neuropathy, a foot wound is urgent, not routine.

Neuropathy questions we hear a lot

Can a podiatrist treat neuropathy?
Yes, and for neuropathy that affects the feet a podiatrist is often the right specialist, especially with diabetic neuropathy. A podiatrist for neuropathy can diagnose the nerve damage, help manage the symptoms, and prevent and treat the foot wounds that numb feet are prone to. On the systemic side, we coordinate with your primary care physician.
Can neuropathy be cured or reversed?
It depends on the cause. Damage from a B12 deficiency or a compressed nerve can often improve once that is corrected. Diabetic nerve damage usually can’t be reversed, but tight blood-sugar control and good foot care can slow it, keep complications away, and often manage the pain well.
Does laser treatment for neuropathy in the feet work?
It can ease burning, tingling, and nerve pain for some patients, and it is drug-free with no downtime. It is not a cure: laser therapy does not regrow damaged nerves, results vary, and it works best as part of a plan that also treats the cause and protects your feet. We will tell you honestly after the exam whether a course of REMY laser therapy is worth trying for you.
Why do my feet feel like they are vibrating or buzzing?
That buzzing or vibrating feeling, sometimes described as a phantom phone going off in your foot, is a classic form of paresthesia, a nerve firing on its own. It is a common early sign of peripheral neuropathy and worth having checked, particularly if you have diabetes.
Do I need a referral, and do you take my insurance?
In Florida you can usually see a podiatrist directly, without a referral. Coverage depends on your plan, and our office verifies your benefits before the visit. We accept most major plans — including Medicare and Cigna — and verify your coverage before the visit, so you see the numbers before anything starts.
Do you see patients from outside North Miami Beach?
Yes. Patients reach our North Miami Beach office from across Miami-Dade, including Aventura, Sunny Isles Beach, Miami Gardens, Hallandale Beach, Miami Beach, North Miami, Miami Springs, Hialeah, Coral Gables, South Miami, Pinecrest, and Key Biscayne.

Numb, burning, tingling feet deserve a real answer.
